Couldn't agree more. "Rules" are a hindrance to creative thought. They should exist only as guidelines - techniques that have been proven to work consistently, but which need not be looked upon as commandments that can never be broken.

It's easy to get tangled in rules and forget that excellent writing involves the intentional breaking thereof to convey story.

Carol- so true. If someone's gushy (and without ulterior motive) I just figure the writing appealed on an emotional level and remind myself that doesn't mean the prose can't be improved.

Eileen- guess the key is the ability of the person offering criticism. If they communicate well, you learn. If not... then I go looking for someone gushy to take the edge off :)

Well said. I tend to distrust positive comments about my writing if they're too gushy. Like you, I learn more from comments about what doesn't work.

I love the title of your post :)
Definitely got my attention.

Well, you got the first draft down on paper...now just roll things around in your mind, and see where they take you. You never know what inspirations will come.

And on top of that, if the novel is complete at 46k, then I see nothing wrong with that. John Steinbeck wrote "Of Mice and Men," and "The Red Pony" and then there was George Orwell's "Animal Farm"...and that's just naming a few stories that are less tha 110 pages. I think that translates to about 30,000 words if you're calculating 250 words per page. So you're way above that.

I say if the story feels full and fleshed out, then stick with it. I for one enjoy a short, fleshed out novel!

Yep...she summed it up pretty well I must say...and I told her so too. It certainly rang true. I am SO happy that you are embracing writing anew and that it is flowing so well...and birds are singing and all!! Makes my heart sing too!!

Be brave friend and give in to writing with abandon...and have the ride of your life!
